While he was known as a professional landscaper for more than 30 years, Steve Gerst of Tumwater, WA. is now known for his award-winning line of barbecue sauces.
Eight years ago, while Steve was on his lunch break during a day of landscaping in Olympia, his client, Duane Whiteside, served him ribs with a special barbecue sauce. Steve took one bite and was hooked, leading him to order a gallon of sauce for his own barbecue. He served family and friends and they loved it too.
Steve and Duane decided to join forces to bottle and market this special barbecue sauce. The original barbecue recipe can be traced back more than 100 years and it is named after Grandville Whiteside, a past Kentucky relative. Chef Cory Crawley has expanded the basic barbecue sauce into other flavors.
Grandville?s BBQ Sauces have gained national attention winning 2 Awards of Excellence from the National Barbecue Association and 5 Scovie Awards. The Scovie Awards are presented by Fiery-Foods and Barbecue Magazine and are named for Wilbur Scoville who pioneered a rating scale for spicy foods. These awards have become the industry standard for excellence in over 60 categories of fiery foods.
